Can’t Wait Wednesday: The Great Mrs. Elias by Barbara Chase-Riboud

Can’t Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings based on the meme Waiting on Wednesday by Breaking the Spine. In this weekly post people share a book that they’re excited about being released.

The book was posted in TBR and Beyond Book Club group and I thought the cover and story was something that I would like to read so I had to pre-order it.

The author of the award-winning Sally Hemings now brings to life Hannah Elias, one of the richest black women in America in the early 1900s, in this mesmerizing novel swirling with atmosphere and steeped in history.

The death of her lover at the hands of an old paramour brings the police to Hannah Elias’ glitzy, five-story, twenty-room mansion on Central Park West. It is beginning of an odyssey that moves back and forth in time and reveals the dangerous secrets of mysterious woman, the fortune she built, and her precipitous fall.

Born in Philadelphia in the late 1800s, light-skinned Hannah Elias has done things she’s not proud of to survive. Secretly married to a white man whom she divorces before relocating to New York, the ambitious woman dreams of becoming as rich as robber baron. Passing as a Southern European, she quietly invests her alimony in the stock market, and begins to grow her fortune with the help of white businessmen. As the money pours in, Hannah hides her millions in two merchant banks, spreading it across 129 private accounts. Finally attaining the life she’s always dreamed, she buys a mansion on the Upper West Side and decorates it in Egyptian designs, gold, and fine decor, inspired by her idol, Cleoparta.

But her lover’s murder turns Hannah’s world upside down and threatens to destroy everything she’s built. When the truth of her racial identity is uncovered, thousands of protestors gather in front of her stately home. Hounded by the salacious press, the very private Mrs. Elias finds herself alone, ensnared in a scandalous trial, and accused of stealing her fortunes from whites.

Packed with glamour, suspense, and drama, populated with real-life luminaries from the period, The Great Mrs. Elias brings a fascinating woman and the age she embodied to glorious tragic life.

Can’t Wait Wednesday: The Box in the Woods (Truly Devious #4) by Maureen Johnson

Can’t Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings based on the meme Waiting on Wednesday by Breaking the Spine. In this weekly post people share a book that they’re excited about being released.

I am looking forward of the release of the fourth book in the Truly Devious series, The Box in the Woods by Maureen Johnson. Looking forward to continue the with Stevie Bell and see what other mystery she is solving this time around.

After solving the case of Truly Devious, Stevie Bell investigates her first mystery outside of Ellingham Academy in this spine-chilling and hilarious stand-alone mystery from New York Times bestselling author Maureen Johnson.

Amateur sleuth Stevie Bell needs a good murder. After catching a killer at her high school, she’s back at home for a normal (that means boring) summer.

But then she gets a message from the owner of Sunny Pines, formerly known as Camp Wonder Falls—the site of the notorious unsolved case, the Box in the Woods Murders. Back in 1978, four camp counselors were killed in the woods outside of the town of Barlow Corners, their bodies left in a gruesome display. The new owner offers Stevie an invitation: Come to the camp and help him work on a true crime podcast about the case.

Stevie agrees, as long as she can bring along her friends from Ellingham Academy. Nothing sounds better than a summer spent together, investigating old murders.

But something evil still lurks in Barlow Corners. When Stevie opens the lid on this long-dormant case, she gets much more than she bargained for. The Box in the Woods will make room for more victims. This time, Stevie may not make it out alive.

Book 2 in the Lady Slayers series, about French murderess and fortune teller Catherine Monvoisin

In 17th-century Paris, 19-year-old Catherine Monvoisin is a well-heeled jeweler’s wife with a peculiar taste for the arcane. She lives a comfortable life, far removed from a childhood of abject destitution—until her kind spendthrift of a husband lands them both in debt. Hell-bent on avoiding a return to poverty, Catherine must rely on her prophetic visions and the grimoire gifted to her by a talented diviner to reinvent herself as a sorceress. With the help of the grifter Marie Bosse, Catherine divines fortunes in the IIle de la Citee—home to sorcerers and scoundrels.

There she encounters the Marquise de Montespan, a stunning noblewoman. When the Marquise becomes Louis XIV’s royal mistress with Catherine’s help, her ascension catapults Catherine to notoriety. Catherine takes easily to her glittering new life as the Sorceress La Voisin, pitting the depraved noblesse against one other to her advantage. The stakes soar ever higher when her path crosses with that of a young magician. I really love Kerri Maniscalco’s Stalking Jack the Ripper series and I was sadden that it had ended but when she announced that she was writing another series, I was so excited and went out to preorder it.

The #1 New York Times bestselling author Kerri Maniscalco introduces her next blockbuster series, a dark, intoxicating tale of a beautiful young witch, a troubled demon, and their epic romance, set against a lush 19th century Italian backdrop.

Emilia and her twin sister Victoria are streghe – witches who live secretly among humans, avoiding notice and persecution. One night, Victoria misses dinner service at the family’s renowned Sicilian restaurant. Emilia soon finds the body of her beloved twin…desecrated beyond belief. Devastated, Emilia sets out to discover who did this, and to seek vengeance at any cost—even if it means using dark magic that’s been long forbidden.

Then Emilia meets Wrath, the outlier among the seven demon brethren, always choosing duty over pleasure. He’s been tasked by his master with investigating a series of women’s murders on the island. When Emilia and Wrath’s fates collide, it’s clear this disturbing mystery will take a bewitching turn…

The reason why I am excited about Ruthless Gods because I really loved the first book in the series and the ending of the book I need to know what happens with Nadya, Serefin, and Malachiasz. Being Emily A. Duncan debut novel, I have to say I was a little surprise that I was going to love it so much. It kept me reading and screaming at the book at certain parts, I even cried. It is understatement that I am excited for April to get here so I can finally read the second book.
