Aiden Emerson is an all-star pitcher and the all-around golden boy of Riverton. Or at least he was, before he quit the team the last day of junior year without any explanation. How could he tell people he’s losing his vision at seventeen?
Straight-laced Olivia thought she had life all figured out. But when her dream internship falls apart, her estranged mother comes back into her life, and her long-time boyfriend ghosts her right before summer break, she’s starting to think fate has a weird sense of humor.
Each struggling to find a new direction, Aiden and Olivia decide to live summer by chance. Every fleeting adventure and stolen kiss is as fragile as a coin flip in this heartfelt journey to love and self-discovery from the author of Love Songs & Other Lies.
I was given the opportunity by the author and NetGalley to read and review When Summer Ends. Normally, I do not read a lot of contemporary books but reading the synopsis I thought and was hoping that I would like it. Honestly, I thought I wasn’t going to enjoy the book but I was pleasantly surprised that I really love it and I adored this book! Jessica’s writing style is amazing and the story flows great between the two POVs.
I love Olivia and Aiden, their friendship/turn into a relationship was done nicely because the reader was able to see the way their relationship developed and them taking chances that they would have never have done before. The story did not shy away with showing the struggles that Aiden and Olivia had in their personal life and how it affected their relationship. The setting of the book was perfect, it brought back memories of when I was younger and had the time of my life during the summertime. When I reach the end of the story, I was sad that their story ended because I wanted to read more about Aiden and Olivia and found out what happen with them afterwards.
There were a couple of things that I would have wish to have seen in the book. I would have love to see more of Ellis and Emma, they both brought a lot to the story and I would like have known more about them.
I really loved this book and I need to pick up Love Songs & Other Lies and I can’t wait to see more beautiful written stories from Jessica.
If you love YA contemporary romance novels, then you need to go out buy When Summer Ends!
If you have read the book, what did you think?
About the Author:
Jessica Pennington is no stranger to the combination of love and drama. She’s a wedding planner, after all. A writer since the age of ten—when she sought publication for her poem about a tree—Jessica likes the challenge of finding the humor in a sad situation or highlighting the awkwardness in a romantic one. A serial entrepreneur with a B.A. in public relations, Jessica has a passion for grassroots marketing. She lives in a Michigan beach town, where she owns more YA novels than many teens and spends most of her time on a laptop, rather than on a beach.
